Brian Westcott, PhD, CEOThere is an age old saying that goes like this “information is wealth”. The old economic laws defined wealth in terms of land, labor and capital. Whoever had them had exclusive use of them too. In the 21st century, these laws have changed. The synergy of information & knowledge is that it grows in value as it is shared and used.
In the shipping industry, with the changing market dynamics and increased global pressures, the need for transparency i.e. information has reached a whole new level.
There are only a handful of companies that are trying to solve this painpoint but none come close to the level of services offered by the leader in this segment, Purfresh a company from Menlo Park, CA. Founded in 2012, the company is the sole provider of actively enhanced atmosphere technology and comprehensively documented real-time monitoring and control.
“Purfresh makes ocean transport a viable option even for the most sensitive cargo. Shippers of fresh produce, meat, flowers, pharmaceuticals and other high value cargo choose our patented technology to mitigate risk, open new markets and reduce transport costs, while protecting valuable freight. In a very real sense, Purfresh allows companies to profitably reach global markets,“ adds Brian Westcott, President and CEO of Purfresh.
Purfresh's cloud-based proprietary software, Intellipur, provides recipe based real-time control of atmospheric conditions inside the reefer, location data, automatic alerts, and detailed trip report— offering growers, manufacturers, ocean carriers, and retailers the competitive advantage.
Real-time monitoring and alerts provide the ability to minimize cargo damage by taking corrective action while the reefer is at sea or in port. Throughout the trip, satellite and/or GSM signals are sent from the Purfresh panel to Purfresh's 24/7 data center. When unexpected conditions occur, such as changes in temperature, relative humidity, oxygen, carbon-di-oxide, and ozone, users automatically receive an alert sent to their computer or smart phone.

At the end of the voyage, comprehensive post-voyage reports are available and provide valuable information about the container's atmospheric conditions during the trip including temperature, humidity, ozone levels, and respiration. In addition, trip reports highlight exactly when and where poweroff events occurred, offering additional insight into the voyage.
Hence Purfresh differentiates itself through its innovative SAAS enterprise application, and their patented controller. “Together they create a unique system that provides all three elements for successful perishable supply chain control of the reefer fleet,” adds Brian.
The company’s offerings have attracted a lot of prestigious partners such as Mediterranean Shipping Company, CMA/CGM, Evergreen, NYK and others and have a made it a market leader in the industry. Moving forward, the company plans to maintain its leadership position in the $10+ billion industrial internet perishable supply chain market.
